The Mechanical Engineer is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of a wide range of projects, including HVAC, plumbing, building controls, specifications, energy audits, energy modeling, and condition assessments, among other diverse work. Clients include city governments, federal agencies, and private entities on diverse project types like educational, commercial, health care, institutional, and industrial buildings and utility systems. Both independent and collaborative work is required. The job involves designing and documenting all aspects of projects, primarily in Alaska, from conception to completion.
Would you like to:
- Designs heating, ventilation and cooling systems, building and process controls, plumbing systems, and renewable energy systems.
- Provides insight and expertise in sustainable design.
- Works with a design team, including architects and other engineering disciplines, to create design plans, specifications, and engineering estimates.
- Engages clients and provides support for marketing the Mechanical Department.
- Prepares scope and fee proposals for submittal to clients.
- Manages scope, schedule and budget for successful projects.
- Oversees work of junior staff and coordinates workloads with Department Lead.
- Provide Quality Assurance and Quality Control for work prepared by other Mechanical Engineers at the company.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Ideally you have:
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Functional proficiency in English language, both written and oral.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Exercises initiative and independent judgement in the solution of work problems
- Able to work with other engineering disciplines, architects, designers, drafters, and project managers.
- Ability to effectively mentor and work with junior staff
- Ability to work independently or with a team.
- Able to travel to remote Alaskan communities periodically for limited site visits. Ability to work with diverse clientele.
- Proficient with computer-assisted design (CAD) software, preferably Revit.
- Exhibit curiosity, collaboration, and desire for bettering the human condition.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
- Minimum 4+ years experience in mechanical engineering.
- Minimum 3+ years active experience in arctic and cold climate engineering design.
- Alaska Professional Mechanical Engineering License or ability to obtain it by comity within 6 months.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
- Walking extended periods during site visits.
- Ability to climb a ladder as needed to inspect above ceilings and other concealed areas.
